Healthy Eating

Food is everywhere; we live in a land of plenty. Since it is so easy to find food, we need to make smart choices about what we put in our mouths and what we make available for our families. Setting up our homes, work places, schools and communities so that healthy food choices are easily available is also something we can all work toward.

What is healthy eating?

Eating is one of life’s great pleasures. It need not be complicated or fancy, but just good food, starting with fresh ingredients. Although some disagree about what should make up a healthy diet, everyone agrees that sharing food with family and friends is part of a good, balanced life. Sharing a meal with families and friends eating together is about so much more than just food; it is there that culture and traditions are shared, where laughter and learning about each other and the food can take place.

Almost all health experts agree that nearly 9 out of 10 of us would benefit from eating more vegetables and fruits. They also recommend eating whole grain foods such as whole wheat bread and pasta and oatmeal. It is also important to include plant-based sources of protein such as beans and nuts, as well as dairy foods and healthy oils like canola and olive oils.
